Solar Panel Cleaning Cost Calculator

Estimate what professional cleaning costs for your panels, and whether the extra energy pays for it.

In many places, rain washes most of the dirt off solar panels, so a paid cleaning isn’t always worth it. This estimator gives a price range for your number of panels and how hard they are to reach, then checks the cost against the energy cleaning would win back.

How this calculator works

Cleaners charge by the panel, usually with a minimum visit fee of about $100. Published price guides run from about $5 to $25 per panel, and put a typical home visit between $170 and $500. The tool splits that range by how easy the panels are to reach: $5 to $10 per panel for a ground mount or a low, easy roof, $10 to $18 for a typical one-story roof, and $18 to $25 for a two-story, steep or hard-to-reach array.

To see whether cleaning pays, the tool takes the energy your system makes in a year at your location, multiplies it by the share lost to dirt, and values that energy at your electricity price. The default loss is 2%, the soiling assumption in PVWatts. If the value is below the cleaning cost, you’re paying for looks and not for savings.

When cleaning does pay

  • Dusty or dry areas with a long season between rains.
  • Panels near farms, roads, trees that drop sap, or birds.
  • Low-tilt panels, under about 10 degrees, which shed dirt poorly.
  • Large systems, where a few percent of energy is worth real money.

For a typical home on a pitched roof in a place with regular rain, skip routine cleaning. Look at your monitoring app instead. If a clear day’s output sits clearly below a similar day just after rain, it’s time to clean.

Questions

How much does it cost to clean solar panels?

Price guides put it at about $5 to $25 per panel, with most home visits between $170 and $500 and a minimum charge near $100. The calculator turns that into a range for your panels.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Once a year or less for most homes. Clean sooner after a dust storm, a pollen season, or if birds roost over the array.

Can I clean the panels myself?

Roof falls are the main danger, so stay off a roof you aren’t trained to work on. Ground-level panels can be rinsed with water and a soft brush. Skip pressure washers and harsh soap.

Does cleaning void the warranty?

It can if the method breaks the maker’s rules. Check the panel warranty, and ask a cleaner what water and tools they use.

Do panels need cleaning if it rains a lot?

Rain removes loose dust. Sticky dirt like bird droppings and tree sap stays put, so spot-clean those.

Do tilted panels stay cleaner?

Yes. Steeper panels shed water and dirt better than flat ones, so a flat or low-tilt array gets dirty faster.
